Antibacterial effects of 6 different bioactive glass powder compositions, i.e. 3-04, S53P4, 13-93, H2-02, 18-04 and 23-04, were tested in vitro. Bioactive glass powders were immersed in simulated body fluid for 48 hours. pH and concentration of the ions in the solution were measured. The growth of 16 aerobic bacterial species after cultivation with bioactive glass powders was analysed. S53P4 bioactive glass, with a total inhibition of all tested bacteria, was the most effective glass to inhibit bacterial growth.

The results of the study revealed that the antibacterial effect of bioactive glasses increased with increasing pH and concentration of earth alkali ions. The antibacterial effect strengthened with glass concentration and a concentration of 50 mg/ml was required to generate bactericidal effect.
